Help with these mixed signals?

Ok there's this guy I like, when we see each other we end up staying up all night talking about crap, we text pretty much every day and seem to genuinely enjoy each others' company. Night before last was the end of year ball and although he didn't originally have a ticket he went to quite alot of effort to get one and to get his suit and shoes from home and agreed to come despite the fact that it would involve spending a hell of a lot of time with my housemates who he doesn't particularly like. He spent plenty of money on drinks and food and taxi fares for both of us. He dragged me everywhere with him, be it to the bar, toilet or outside cos he was hot and spent a fair amount of the time we were wandering through the crowds holding my hand. When we went back home in the morning we sat curled up on the sofa, he played with my hair and jewellery and we fell asleep for a couple of hours with my head on his lap. He sometimes seems really affectionate and at the ball seemed to try and 'open up' a bit although I was pretty drunk so don't really remember that much of what he said. He openly told me I'm attractive and he enjoys my company and was talking about me with my friends bf (although I couldn't really hear what was said). Then he'll totally change his tune, tell me not to hold his hand and tell me he's not into me. So frickin confused! One of my friends reckons he's being detached cos I'm leaving the city in a couple of weeks and meeting up would be tricky, or that he just doesn't know what he wants. Any ideas from anyone on what he means/ what to do etc??
