BIKES:can i put a rear axel on a front wheel?

can you put the back tire/rim on the front forks? as long as the gears don't hit the forks I don't see why not. and why is it dangerous? if the back rim fits on the forks and the gears don't rub on the forks I fail to see the problem or any danger associated with it.
