So why is/was it 'appropriate' to refer to Nixon as Tricky D--k,but it's unheard of to refer to Obama as such?

The only reason it's unheard of for Obama is that the press until now hasn't reported it. I've been calling him something a whole lot worse since he began running for the Presidency. That said, it's about time somebody spoke the truth about Obama.
